Description
The Did you Know Collection is a teaching moment for some and a reminder for others about our history and culture. The Arawak and The Caribs are Amerindian peoples indigenous to the entire Caribbean. They were expert hunters, farmers, fishermen, and skilled artists. The term "Arawak" also refers to the Lokono of South America and the Taíno, who historically lived in the Greater Antilles and northern Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. Arawaks are described as peaceful people whereas there counterparts, always seem to be deemed cannibals and warriors and although they would live side be side in certain areas and intermarry they were also known to be enemies.
The Caribs also known as the Kalinago are an indigenous people of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean and may have been related to the Mainland Caribs (Kalina) of South America, they also spoke a pidgin language.
The Garifuna or "Black Caribs", a group of mixed Carib, Arawak and African ancestry, live mainly in Central America.
The Arawak and The Caribs resisted European settlement on their lands and were therefore seen as aggressive and dangerous. Many died fighting for their land and against the violence and brutality that they endured from the invaders. Those that survived were made slaves.
